Judge Paul Siegel was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1963 and has been a judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit Court in Miami since 1991. He is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who in American Law. Before being appointed to the bench by Governor Chiles, he was rated AV in the Martindale-Hubbell directory. In private practice for 26 years, he concentrated on civil litigation in family law, torts, commercial matters, medical malpractice, and hospital law. He was in the first group of Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyers. In law school, Judge Siegel was editor-in-chief and executive editor of the law review at the University of Miami, where as an undergraduate he studied physics and mathematics. His interest in nuclear physics led him to join the legal staff of the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C., after law school. Shortly after entering private practice, Judge Siegel participated as both a pro bono attorney and a party in a case that raised security and safety issues concerning two then-proposed nuclear reactors at Turkey Point south of Miami. For a report of that case, see Siegel v. Atomic Energy Commission, 400 F.2d 778 (D.C. Cir. 1968). In leisure time Judge Siegel enjoys snow skiing, water skiing, and bicycling, is a classical music and jazz aficionado who attends many performances, and travels with his wife. He is fluent in French and Spanish and has some working knowledge of German, Italian, and Creole. Judge Siegel is also interested in computers and has designed his own dual monitor computer system for his office and home. He worked with the court computer staff to make wireless Internet available at the Dade County Courthouse and has advocated using laptops in the courtroom for legal research, checking prospective juror litigation histories, document and deposition storage and access, and using and searching this book on CD-ROM during trial, rather than carrying the hardcover edition.
